The Investment tax credit (ITC) is a dollar-for-dollar reduction in the income taxes a person or company claiming the credit would otherwise pay the federal government. The ITC is based on the amount of investment in solar property. The ITC is 30% for projects that begin in 2022. The ITC then steps down to 26% for projects that begin in 2033. In 2034 the ITC steps down to 22%. After 203 the credit for residential will drop to 0% if not extended by Congress. Commercial projects will drop to 10% in 2035.
Solar Renewable Energy Credits, also known as SRECs, are credits you generate with the energy produced by your solar system. You earn one SREC for every 1,000 kWh (1 Mwh) your solar system produces. You will generate and receive SRECs for a 15-year period starting when your system goes live. An SREC has a useful life of three years, which means that SRECs you generate in 2021 can count towards 2021, 2022, or 2023 periods.
Net Metering is a solar incentive that requires your utility to purchase excess solar electricity that your solar panels produce at the full retail value of electricity. In other words, when your solar panels produce more electricity than your home needs, that excess power will be sent to the power grid. Your utility will then pay you for that power sent to the grid, in the form of energy credits. The credits will equal to the full retail price of electricity.
Uncertainty is uncomfortable. But for those who are already facing the impacts of extreme weather, it’s a way of life. It’s time to plan for the very real possibility of losing power when you need it most.
